User Research: Methods and Practice

Syllabus

Introduction

This course introduces a variety of user research methods used in academic research and industry practices, including user interviewing, grounded theory approach, user persona design, log data analysis, user experiment, participatory design, diary studies, heuristic evaluation, cognitive walkthrough, usability testing, and ethics in user research. This course is open to library and information science graduate students, and is conducted through lectures, reading and discussion, assignments, and user research practices.

Objectives

  • Understand how user research applies to engineering design problems
  • Identify a range of user research methods and the associated instruments
  • Ask the right questions to determine which kind of user research is best suited to different circumstances, including scope and timeline of a study
  • Create user research instruments
  • Construct a research problem and specific research question based on relevant literature, or experience, including identifying relevant variables
  • Select and apply appropriate data analysis methods

Language

English/Chinese

Evaluation

Reading notes and class participation   20%

Assignments                                         20%

Research practice                                 30%

Final paper                                           30%

Late submission policy

  • Assignments should be submitted PRIOR to the class time
  • If a submission is late by up to 24 hours, the grade will be reduced by 20%. By 48 hours, 40%. And so forth.
  • There are several common problems that I am unlikely to consider as valid reasons for failing to get work in on time. These include (a) failure to manage your time properly, (b) discovering an assignment is harder or takes longer than you expected it to be (see item a), and (c) losing code or data that should have been backed up.
