Gu J. Exploring the impact of digital economy on urban entrepreneurship: Evidence from China’s cities. PLoS ONE [Internet]. 2024;19(7):e0307855. 访问链接Abstract
This paper aims to examine the impact of the digital economy on urban entrepreneurship and its spatial spillover effects. To achieve this purpose, this research relies on data from 252 prefecture-level cities in China from 2012 to 2019. The findings demonstrate that the development of the digital economy has a positive influence on entrepreneurial activity in cities, with particularly effects observed robust at higher quantile levels. Additionally, the results suggest that urban entrepreneurial activity may be a siphoning effect, impeding entrepreneurship in neighboring cities. Furthermore, further investigation shows regional and policy heterogeneity.
Gu J. Family social capital and entrepreneurship in rural China: potential mediating mechanisms. Economic Change and Restructuring [Internet]. 2024;57:141. 访问链接Abstract
Promoting rural family entrepreneurship is an effective way to realize rural revitalization. The primary aim of this study is to assess the entrepreneurial impact of family social capital on rural households in China. The objective of this study is to understand how family social capital affects rural entrepreneurship in a Chinese context. Using data from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies, this study empirically tests the effect of family social capital on rural family entrepreneurship. Research shows that family social capital is significantly and positively correlated with rural family entrepreneurship, indicating that it is an essential determinant in promoting rural family entrepreneurship. Internet use is an effective transmission path for family social capital, which affects rural entrepreneurship, and the impact of rural entrepreneurship varies with family size and household head characteristics. This study not only enriches the theoretical understanding of rural entrepreneurship but also sheds light on the behavioral mechanisms that explain the entrepreneurial process of rural households. To promote rural entrepreneurship and revitalization, it is important to be adept at activating family social capital.
Gu J. Does the Visa-Free Policy Promote Inbound Tourism? Evidence From China. SAGE Open [Internet]. 2024;14(2):1-17. 访问链接Abstract
A visa-free policy is a tool for attracting foreign tourists, but existing studies evaluating its effects do not consider spatial spillover. This study, therefore, examined the effects of visa policies on urban inbound tourism with spatial spillover. This study used the implementation of the 72-hr visa-free transit policy in China as a natural experiment and employed a spatial difference-in-differences approach. The results show that the implementation of the 72-hr visa-free transit policy had no significant effect on the number of foreign tourists, but can reduce the average length of stay for foreign tourists. It also shows that there is a significant spatial spillover effect on the flow of foreign tourists. The results indicate the importance of spatial spillover in the evaluation of the impact of visa policy on inbound tourism, providing empirical evidence for further improving visa-free policies and urban tourism development.
Gu J. Dynamic bidirectional relationship between financial inclusion and energy poverty: Evidence from China. Energy Reports [Internet]. 2024;11:5300-5314. 访问链接Abstract
Financial inclusion and energy poverty have an interactive relationship; however, this two-way relationship lacks sufficient research. This study investigates the two-way mechanisms of financial inclusion, energy poverty, and neighborhood spillover effects. Using a spatial simultaneous equation model, this study examines 2615 Chinese rural households in 2020. Results reveal a statistically significant positive interaction between financial inclusion and energy poverty. In addition, the neighborhood spillover effects of financial inclusion and energy poverty are both significantly positive, whereas their neighborhood interaction spillover effects are significantly negative.
Gu J. The low‑carbon city initiative and urban inbound tourismeconomy: a spatial difference‑in‑differences analysis. Environment, Development and Sustainability [Internet]. 2024;000:1-22. 访问链接Abstract
Although tourism is often treated as one of the crucial industries for the construction of low-carbon cities (LCCs), there is no systematic evidence on whether there is a causal relationship. This research aims to explore and empirically test the causal link between LCC initiatives and inbound tourism of cities using a spatial difference-in-differences approach with balanced panel data of 59 Chinese major tourism cities from 2000 to 2017. The results show that urban tourism by foreign tourists exhibits significant spatial spillover effects. Compared to non-LCCs, the number of foreign tourists on LCCs increased by 4.7 percentage points and the average length of stay of foreign tourists increased by 3.6 percentage points. The direct impact of the LCC initiative on foreign tourists was significant, while the indirect impact was insignificant. The findings of the study not only deepen the researchon sustainable tourism behavior of inbound tourists, but also provide valuable references for cities to participate in the competition in the international tourism market through low-carbon development.
Gu J. Determinants of public transportation disability among older adults in China. Transport Policy [Internet]. 2024;150:71-79. 访问链接Abstract
Public transportation is important for older adults to meet their mobility needs and obtain external support. However, little is known about the elderly population with disabilities using public transportation. Using a nationally representative sample from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) for 2016, 2018, and 2020, we examined the elderly and public transportation disability (E&PTD) rate and its determinants in Chinese adults aged 45 years and above; the E&PTD rate in this population was 9.65%. The results showed that factors such as being female, age, and family size increased the likelihood of E&PTD in older adults. Married older adults with more education, better intelligence, higher incomes, receiving a pension, and living in urban areas and pilot provinces of healthcare reform were less likely to have E&PTD. This study provides an important policy reference for providing better public transportation services for E&PTDs.
Gu J. Investor attention and ESG performance: Lessons from China's manufacturing industry. Journal of Environmental Management [Internet]. 2024;355:120483. 访问链接Abstract
In the context of the rapid growth of corporate green investment and the rapid dissemination of information brought about by Internet technology, it is important to explore the relationship between investor attention and corporate environmental responsibility. Unfortunately, an in-depth research on the relationship between investor attention and firms' environment, society, and governance (ESG) performance remains unexplored. The results show a mutual inhibition between investor attention and firms’ ESG performance. Each 1% increase in investor attention decreases ESG performance by 0.252%, while each 1% increase in ESG performance decreases investor attention by 2.296%. Thus, ESG performance dominates this mutual influence. Moreover, ESG performance positively affects ESG performance and investor attention of neighboring firms. Each 1% increase in ESG performance increases ESG performance and investor attention of neighboring firms by 0.371% and 0.983%, respectively. Investor attention negatively affects investor attention and ESG performance of neighboring firms. Each 1% increase in investor attention decreases ESG performance and investor attention of neighboring firms by 0.04% and 0.104%, respectively. Further research reveals significant regional and organizational heterogeneity in the relationship between investor attention and ESG performance. The findings provide theoretical and empirical insights for further improvement of the ESG system and continued strengthening of investor guidance by regulators.
Gu J. The Impact of Regional Patent Policies on University Technology Transfer: Empirical Evidence from China. Journal of the Knowledge Economy [Internet]. 2024;000(000):1-27. 访问链接Abstract
The low commercialization rate of academic patents is a common challenge for developing countries. This study evaluates the impact of provincial policies on the commercialization of academic patents using spatial regression models and propensity score matching methods. It also provides a reference for optimizing university patent management. Considering provincial patent policies enacted in China in 2016 as the treatment, the results show no significant effect of provincial patent policies on rights definition and implementation economics on the commercialization of academic patents. However, promotion standard policies have a significant positive effect on the commercialization of academic patents. A significant negative spatial spillover effect is observed on the commercialization of academic patents among universities with similar innovation capabilities. Furthermore, non-geographic distances, such as innovation distance, positively affect competition among universities and their commercialization of academic patents. Therefore, local governments should consider the needs of academic inventors for title promotion when designing and introducing patent incentive policies for universities.
Gu J. Digital economy, peer influence, and persistent green innovation of firms: a mixed embeddedness perspective. Environmental Science and Pollution Research [Internet]. 2024;000(000):1-14. 访问链接Abstract
Persistent green innovation helps enterprises save energy, reduce pollution, and continue to gain economic benefits. However, existing studies explored the economic and organizational factors influencing firms’ persistent green innovation while neglecting peer influence in the digital economy. This study examines the impact of digital economy and peer influence on persistent green innovation using data of Chinese-listed companies from 2011 to 2019. The results show that digital economy and peer influence positively affect persistent green innovation. Moreover, digital economy plays a competitive mediating role between peer influence and persistent green innovation. The results of further research show that both the time lag term of peer influence and spatial lag term of digital economy affect persistent green innovation. This study incorporates the three-level elements of enterprise, peer, and city into a unified framework, providing theoretical reference and practical guidance for green innovation to enhance the competitive advantage of enterprises.
Gu J. Neighborhood Does Matter: Farmers’ Local Social Interactions and Land Rental Behaviors in China. Land [Internet]. 2024;13(1):76. 访问链接Abstract
The transfer of farmland is an important area of rural development research; however, the impact of rural social networks has been neglected in studies. The aim of this study is to explore the effects, mechanisms, and heterogeneity of neighbors’ behavior on the process of land renting by farmers. Based on the data of the China Family Panel Studies in 2018, this research empirically analyzes the impact of community-level, local social interactions on the land rental behavior of farmers and its mechanisms using a spatial probit model. The results of this study indicate that neighbors’ land rental behavior positively and significantly affects that of other farmers in the same village. In addition, neighbors’ land rental encourages other farmers in the same village to follow suit through an increase in the perceived importance of the Internet among the farmers. In addition, there is heterogeneity in neighborhood influence. Notably, the impact of social networks on the renting out of the land by farmers, as evidenced in this study, is a key factor in accelerating the circulation of rural land and promoting rural development, thus contributing to the process of rural revitalization and its recording in the literature.
Gu J. Digitalization, Spillover and Environmental, Social, and Governance Performance: Evidence From China. The Journal of Environment & Development [Internet]. 2024;33(2):286–311. 访问链接Abstract
There is growing interest in the relationship between digitalization and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, but existing research focuses on the one-way relationship and ignores the two-way mechanism. Based on a sample of 3335 listed companies in China in 2020, this study adopts a spatial simultaneous equation model to investigate the bidirectional mechanism between companies’ digitalization and ESG performance. The results show that digitalization and ESG performance have a significant positive two-way mechanism; digitalization enhances ESG performance, while ESG performance promotes digitalization. The results also indicate a significant positive intra-industry spillover effect for both digitization and ESG performance. Further research shows that the relationship between digitization and ESG performance does not differ depending on the definition of spatial weights, however, the spillover effects do differ depending on the definition of spatial weights.
Gu J. Peer influence, market power, and enterprises' green innovation: Evidence from Chinese listed firms. Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management [Internet]. 2024;31(1):108-121. 访问链接Abstract
In the era of a green economy, green innovation has become a way for enterprises to gain competitive advantage, and it is of great theoretical and practical significance to explore the driving force of enterprises' green innovation. This study explores the peer effect of an enterprise's green innovation and conducts an empirical test using data from 3338 Chinese listed companies in 2020. The results show a significant positive peer effect of enterprises' green innovation, and the green innovation of individual enterprises increases by 0.869 for each unit increase in industry-average green innovation. Further research shows that market power is the channel by which peer influence affects an enterprise's green innovation. Moreover, regional heterogeneity exists in the strength of the peer effect, which varies according to firm maturity and board size. These findings provide a reference for enterprises and governments to promote green transformation.
Gu J. The impact of national tourism day festivals on inbound tourism: A spatial difference-in-differences approach. Tourism Economics [Internet]. 2024;30(2):417-441. 访问链接Abstract
A comprehensive and accurate assessment of the policy effect of national tourism days is of great significance to further promote urban inbound tourism. Based on the panel data of 59 cities in China from 2000 to 2017, this paper evaluates the local and spatial spillover effects of the China Tourism Day policy on urban inbound tourism using a spatial difference-in-differences model based on the establishment of the China Tourism Day as a quasi-natural experiment. The study found that the China Tourism Day policy significantly increased the number of foreign tourists in cities but significantly reduced their average length of stay, with a positive spatial spillover effect on inbound tourism in surrounding cities.

Gu J. Intra-industry or spatial spillovers: Empirical study on the impact of digital finance on green energy innovation. Journal of Cleaner Production [Internet]. 2023;433:139797. 访问链接Abstract
As global climate change intensifies, programs to promote green energy innovation are becoming increasingly urgent for humanity. However, academic debate on whether to prioritize industrial or regional policies continues, detracting the focus from programmes to promote green energy innovation. Using data from 3456 listed companies in China in 2020, this study aims to test intra-industry and spatial spillovers to provide empirical evidence to resolve the academic debate and investigate the impact of urban digital finance on corporate green energy innovation to assess the effectiveness of urban policies. Results show that firms' green energy innovations have significant intra-industry spillovers, but no significant spatial spillovers. Moreover, urban digital finance contributes significantly to green energy innovation. The impact of urban digital finance on green energy innovation varies by a firm's nature, internal controls, and external audits. Therefore, this study proposes a multilevel ecosystem for green energy innovation that theoretically supports a comprehensive and systematic understanding of corporate green energy innovation and guidelines for the precise implementation of policy portfolios.
Gu J. Energy poverty and government subsidies in China. Energy Policy [Internet]. 2023;180:113652. 访问链接Abstract
Identifying the policy effect of government subsidies on families is beneficial to alleviate household energy poverty. This study first builds a Propensity Score Matching–Difference-in-Differences (PSM-DID) model and empirically tests the impact of government subsidies on household energy poverty in China based on China Family Panel Studies data from 2016 to 2018. The results show that household energy poverty is considered to have obvious regional differences. Moreover, the results indicate that government subsidies can reduce the probability of household energy poverty by 38.1%. However, the effect of government subsidies in alleviating household energy poverty will vary depending on the specific household situation. It is concluded that subsidies provided by the Chinese government to households can effectively alleviate household energy poverty. Finally, some policy recommendations are proposed based on the results of the empirical analysis.
Gu J. Does the commercialization of academic patents spatially converge? Empirical evidence from China. Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy [Internet]. 2023;000(000):1-25. 访问链接Abstract
This research develops a spatial analytical framework to investigate the spatial distribution and dynamic evolution of academic patent commercialization. The results showed that the gravity center of academic patents commercialization in China shifted from southwest to northeast from 2010 to 2019, showing the characteristics of alternating spatial convergence and spatial divergence. Moreover, economic development will promote the centralization of the commercialization of academic patents, while local fiscal science and technology expenditure, development of local public libraries, regional urbanization and traffic decentralization will promote the decentralization of the commercialization of academic patents. Those findings affirm that spatial convergence or divergence of academic patent commercialization is the dynamic result of the contrast between the two forces of centralization and decentralization. This study provides an analytical framework for scholars to explore the dynamic spatial pattern evolution of academic patent commercialization.
Gu J. Commercialization of academic patents in Chinese universities: Antecedents and spatial spillovers. Heliyon [Internet]. 2023;9(3):e14601. 访问链接Abstract
The commercialization of academic patents is a basic means for universities to promote economic growth and upgrade the industrial innovation of enterprises. However, among developing countries, the commercialization rate of university patents is generally low. This study utilizes data from 65 universities which are directly under the Ministry of Education of China to analyze the influencing factors and mechanisms of academic patent commercialization. The findings show that the proportion of associate professors, the size of service staff transforming research and development achievement, and the proportion of basic research funding in universities are positively correlated with the commercialization rate of university patents. In addition, these factors indirectly affect the commercialization of university patents by affecting neighboring universities; that is, there are spatial spillover effects in the commercialization of university patents between neighboring universities. These empirical results indicate that universities can promote the commercialization of university patents by optimizing the structure of faculty, developing the R&D achievement transformation service staff team, and strengthening investment in basic research.
Ma Y, Gu J. Internet and depression in adolescents: Evidence from China. Frontiers in Psychology [Internet]. 2023;14:1026920. 访问链接Abstract
Despite growing attention to Internet activity as a social determinant of depression in adolescents, few studies have focused on its diverse effects on depressive symptoms. Using data from the 2020 China Family Panel Study, this study employed logistic regression analysis to examine how Internet activity affects depressive symptoms in adolescents in China. The results indicated that adolescents with longer online duration using mobile phones tended to have higher levels of depression. Adolescents who engaged in online activities related to games, shopping, and entertainment had more severe depressive symptoms, but their time spent on online learning was not significantly associated with their level of depression. These findings suggest a dynamic link between Internet activity and adolescent depression and offer policy implications for addressing depressive symptoms in adolescents. Specifically, Internet and youth development policies and public health programs during the COVID-19 pandemic should be designed based on a comprehensive account of all aspects of Internet activity.
Gu J. Firm Performance and Corporate Social Responsibility: Spatial Context and Effect Mechanism. SAGE Open [Internet]. 2023;13(1):1-16. 访问链接Abstract
This study investigates the effect of firm performance on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in a specific spatial context. The results for a sample of 1,557 listed companies in China suggest that a firm’s CSR performance level is influenced by that of nearby firms. This study also confirms the indirect link between financial and CSR performance through the mediating role of institutional and executive shareholding rates. In addition, the empirical evidence in this study not only supports the spatial context-sensitive thesis but, more importantly, proposes a spatiotemporal context-sensitive thesis. It provides strong empirical support for the true relative value of the spatiotemporal context affecting CSR performance, which yields important theoretical, methodological, and policy implications.
Gu J. The impacts of the low-carbon city policy on urban air pollution in China. Energy & Environment [Internet]. 2023;000(000):1-20. 访问链接Abstract
Declining levels of social welfare caused by climate warming and air pollution place increasing constraints on high-quality, sustainable global development. To achieve global climate-governance goals, it is essential to accelerate the process of peaking carbon emissions and meeting air-quality standards. Despite growing awareness of the impact of low-carbon city policies on the environment, few studies have focused on their impact on urban air quality. Based on panel data drawn from 275 cities between 2011 and 2017, the present study evaluates the effects of a low-carbon city policy on urban sulfur-dioxide emissions, using the low-carbon city policy as a quasi-natural experiment. The findings reveal that urban sulfur-dioxide emissions have obvious spatial-autocorrelation characteristics, showing obvious spatial clustering. The low-carbon city policy not only significantly reduced urban sulfur-dioxide emissions in pilot cities, but also suppressed sulfur-dioxide emissions in surrounding cities through an indirect rebound effect. This paper provides a theoretical reference for collaborative governance, which can help to achieve peak carbon emissions and air-quality standards. To reach those goals, nations must abandon territorial prevention-and-control methods based on administrative divisions and to fully activate cross-city regional joint prevention-and-control measures. This study proposes key policies, including promoting inter-city regional coordination mechanisms, strengthening the collaborative governance in relation to carbon-dioxide and sulfur-dioxide emissions, and promoting the construction of inner-city green facilities.
