LIAN-MAO PENG received the B.S. degree in physical electronics from Peking University, Beijing, China, in 1982 and the Ph.D. degree in physics from Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, USA, in 1988. From May to December 1988, he visited the University of Oslo as a visiting scientist.
