The neutron-rich nuclei 109Nb and 109Zr have been populated using in-flight fission of a 238U beam at 345 MeV/nucleon at the \RIBF\ facility. A T 1 / 2 = 150 ( 30 ) ns isomer at 313 keV has been identified in 109Nb for the first time. The low-lying levels in 109Nb have been also populated following the β-decay of 109Zr. Based on the difference in feeding pattern between the isomeric and β decays, the decay scheme from the isomeric state in 109Nb was established. The observed hindrances of the electromagnetic transitions deexciting the isomeric state are discussed in terms of possible shape coexistence. Potential energy surface calculations for single-proton configurations predict the presence of low-lying oblate-deformed states in 109Nb.

The non-relativistic approximation of the quark–meson-coupling model has been discussed and compared with the Skyrme–Hartree–Fock model which includes spin exchanges. Calculations show that the spin-exchange interaction has important effect on the descriptions of finite nuclei and nuclear matter through the Fock exchange. Also in the quark–meson-coupling model, it is the Fock exchange that leads to a nonlinear density-dependent isovector channel and changes the density-dependent behavior of the symmetry energy.

A lifetime measurement has been made for the first excited 11 / 2 + state in the proton-unbound nucleus I 56 53 109 using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method in conjunction with recoil-proton tagging. The experimental reduced transition probability is considerably smaller than the prediction of theoretical shell-model calculations using the CD-Bonn nucleon–nucleon potential. The discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental reduced transition strengths in this work most likely arises from the inability of the current shell-model calculations to accurately account for the behavior of the unbound nuclear states.

A number of applications have been proposed concerning the isomers, including the creation of a gamma-ray laser, since some of them may store large amounts of energy for long times. Against this background, the field of triggered gamma emission is entering a new phase in which improved level data allow targeting of specific potentially-useful transitions. In the present work, the configuration-constrained (diabatic blocking) calculations, with inclusion of γ-deformation, are performed to study the multi quasi-particle (multi-qp) excitations of 178Hf. The detailed excitation energies known in 178Hf are reasonably reproduced. From our calculations, two levels besides the existing level at 2.573 MeV are found for candidates of these intermediate states (or called depletion levels). Whether these two excited states actually exist will require additional experimentation.
