Managing Globalized and Politicized Risks
Powered by Collaborative and Innovative Research
MISSION STATEMENT
In the today's world, risks take many forms and are globalized via dense transnational connections. Geopolitical, economic, environmental, and health threats, crises, and tragedies occupy daily news outlets and their impact and implications felt around the world. Minds, resources, activities have been increasingly devoted to risk detection and management. Risk is shaping every respect of human life. We are in an age of risk.
Risk is intimately related to notions of politics. On the one hand, politics determines the whole life cycle of risk governance, playing a crucial role in risk definition, risk selection, risk politicization, and risk management. On the other, risk changes the logic and dynamic of politics by shifting politics from seeking for interests to avoiding losses, from dealing with threats to preemptively tackling uncertainties, from practising self-help to urging for global cooperation.
The Analysis Lab for Global Risk Politics at Peking University (Risk-A-Lab) is a computational social science lab. It is committed to promoting multidisciplinary collaborative and cutting-edge research to advance our understandings of and solutions to globalized and politicized risks.
Risk A-Lab is affiliated with the School of International Relations, Peking University. The Lab pools and integrates research resources located in different departments and schools at PKU, builds and expands domestic and international networks, advances scholarly and policy research on global risk politics, and serves a bridge between risk researchers and decision makers.
