This graduate seminar is taught in English with the purpose of introducing historiographies, theories, methodologies, current debates and cutting-edge scholarships on the modern history of Island Southeast Asia. Adopting a comparative perspective, this course aims to discuss important themes concerning the modern history of Southeast Asia--currently Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, East Timor, and the Philippines--as a region rather than studying each country as a distinct polity. Such themes include, but are not limited to the conceptualization of Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian studies, colonialism and decolonization, nationalism and anti-colonial movements, Chinese diaspora, nation-building in post-colonial societies, authoritarian government and the Cold War, China-Southeast Asia relations. Reading materials concentrate primarily on English historical writings, supplemented by sources in Chinese and Southeast Asian languages. The course aims to enhance graduate students' ability to conduct original historical research by introducing general knowledge about the region while cultivating their sense of critical thinking. In addition to the history-focused training, this seminar will also introduce students to interdisciplinary methods in other fields such as comparative literature, political science, and anthropology. Based on students' needs, the instructor will provide guidance to improve academic writing skills and recommend primary and secondary sources to develop their individual projects.
