1. Redox chemistry of Li-ion batteriey materials

Li-ion batteries work as a rocking chair by shuttling Li ions back and forth between postive and negative electrodes, with concerted electron transfer through external circuit. Associated with every Li+ extraction/insertion is the removal/entering of one electron from/into the electrode, to maintain charge neutrality, that constitutes the groundwork of any electrochemical system, being termed as redox reaction. The occurence of these redox reactions can be on both cations and anions. The latter, called as anionic redox, is now the focus of Li-ion cathodes research due to its ability to enable high capacity. It also brings a facinating realm of crystallography chemistry and electrochemistry that are also associated with band structures of materials. We have made some progresses on understanding the stability and activation of anionic redox process in Li-ion batteries.
